3 Understanding Octaves (सप्तक )

1. सप्तक क्या है ? What is a Saptak ?

Saptak means octave

"सा" स्वर से "नी" स्वर तक एक सप्तक होता है

Octave = C D E F G A B

सप्तक = सा रे ग म प ध नी

सप्तक = सा रे ग म प ध नी

2. What are three successive octaves called ?

तीन सप्तक जो एक के पीछे एक हो, तो क्या कहलाता है ?

तीन सप्तक आजू बाजू मे हो तो,

पहले मन्द्र सप्तक ,

बीच या दुसरे सप्तक को मध्य सप्तक,

आखिर या तीसरे सप्तक को तार सप्तक कहते है

If there are three successive octaves,

the first octave is called mandra saptak or lower octave,

the next or second octave is called madhya saptak or middle octave

and last or third octave is called taar saptak or higher octave

3. How to denote the notes of different saptak ?

सप्तक के स्वर दर्शाते / लिकते है ?

You denote the lower octave notes by putting a dot under the note

You denote higher octave notes by putting a dot above the note

You denote the middle octave notes without any dots

मन्द्र सप्तक के स्वर को नीचे बिन्दु डालके दर्शाते / लिकते है

मध्य सप्तक के स्वर में कोई बिन्दु नहीं दर्शाते / लिकते है

तार सप्तक के स्वर को ऊपर बिन्दु डालके दर्शाते / लिकते है

4.  How to type the notes of different octaves?

type 0307+Alt+X after the character and it will put a dot above the 

character

Ṣ

type 0323+Alt+X after the character and it will put a dot below the 

 character

S̲

type 0332+Alt+X after the character and it will put a dot below the 

character

select the character and press Ctrl+U to underline the character

Underlined notes are your flat notes

S̅ 

type 0305+Alt+X after the character and it will put a dot above the 

character

A line on top of the note are your sharp notes
